GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

The Dean of Students provides strategic leadership to foster a dynamic and student-centered experience. This role is responsible for student conduct management and the development and execution of key initiatives that drive student engagement, well-being, and success. The Dean oversees a dedicated team committed to advancing holistic student support and fostering a culture of belonging.

A champion for student success, this position integrates a student-centered perspective throughout the College, promoting a unified, inclusive approach that engages students, faculty, and staff across the College, including Campus Centers. The Dean ensures institutional compliance with evolving SUNY, state, federal and other legal regulations related to student affairs.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide leadership and/or oversight of departments, including but not limited to the Dean of Students Office, Access and Accommodations, Counseling, Childcare Center, EOP, CSTEP, Testing, and the Wellness Center.

Maintain and ensure the accuracy of all policies, procedures, standards, and training related to student conduct and development, including administration of the Student Code of Conduct.

Serve as the primary contact and problem solver for concerns raised by students, faculty, parents, and community members and assess training and outreach needs.

Lead high-level and complex student conduct cases and oversee all judicial processes, including conduct reviews, hearings, disciplinary actions, suspensions, and expulsions.

Provide strategic leadership for student judicial processes, with an emphasis on consistency, fairness, and student development.

Chair the Behavior Intervention Team (BIT), ensuring timely and effective responses to student behavioral issues.

Stay current on SUNY, state, and federal regulations related to student affairs, including but not limited to Title IX, Title VI, VAWA, and the Clery Act; lead institutional compliance efforts where applicable.

Develop and manage the Dean of Students annual operational budget and oversee grant-funded program budgets as required.

Supervise and evaluate direct reports; make staffing and promotional recommendations to the Vice President for Student Affairs as appropriate.

Lead, attend, and/or support divisional and college-wide activities and events and participate in college committees, as appropriate.

Commit to continuing professional development and participate in professional organizations, as appropriate.

Perform additional duties as assigned by the Vice President for Student Affairs & Chief Diversity Officer.

Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or a related field required; a doctorate is preferred.

Experience

Minimum of five years of progressive higher education experience or related, including at least three in a supervisory role. Demonstrated knowledge of Title IX regulations and related processes, along with expertise in student conduct and behavioral intervention practices, is essential. A strong foundation in student development, intervention and support services, orientation, and/or student programming is desirable. Prior experience in a community college setting is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong understanding of the community college mission and its role in promoting student success.

Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage diverse audiences.

Applied knowledge of student development theory, student conduct practices, and college counseling approaches.

Demonstrated ability to design and implement innovative programs that foster student engagement, well-being, and success.

Knowledge of the impact of student affairs on enrollment, retention, and overall student achievement.

Commitment to cultural sensitivity and awareness of diverse backgrounds.

Effective problem-solving abilities grounded in empathy, strategic thinking, and student-centered decision-making.

Proven capacity to build collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, and institutional stakeholders.

Proficiency in data analysis and reporting to inform program development and decision-making.

Experience or working knowledge of higher education technologies, including, but not limited to Student Information Systems (Banner), report-writing tools, and conduct management software (Maxient).

SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a Batavia campus-based 12-month, Management Confidential position at 35 hours per week. Compensation is $100,162.43 annually. Benefits and conditions of employment are as set by Procedure 230. Position requires a flexible work schedule to accommodate evening and weekend demands as needed.
