Base Salary (Effective January 2025): $73,636.85 - $92,718.77 annually (dependent upon qualifications).
Additional salary incentives available.

General Description
The Albany Police Department seeks lateral police officers to fill three positions due to retirements and establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

Eligibility for Lateral Police Officer
A lateral police officer is defined as having at least three years of continuous service as a sworn officer, handling 9-1-1 calls, with a recognized state, county, or city law enforcement agency, and in good standing with the current or most recent employer.

Salary and Incentives
Base Salary (Effective January 2025)
$73,636.85 - $92,718.77 annually.

Incentives

Education:
6% for a Bachelor's degree
3% for an Associate's degree
Certifications:
8% for DPSST Advanced Certification
4% for DPSST Intermediate Certification
Language Proficiency:
5% for advanced Spanish
3% for intermediate Spanish
Assignments:
5% for Field Training Officer, School Resource Officer, or Detective

Selection Process
The process includes the following steps:

Application Review

Successful applicants meeting the lateral definition proceed to the next steps.
Initial Virtual Interview

A preliminary screening interview.
Trip #1

Includes an oral board interview and background investigation.
Trip #2

If successful in the initial steps, candidates receive a conditional offer and complete a psychological evaluation, medical examination, and drug screening.
Preemployment Finalization

Conditional offers are contingent upon successful completion of all evaluations and background checks.
Essential Functions
Perform patrol duties, traffic enforcement, and respond to emergency calls.
Investigate crimes, collect evidence, and prepare cases for prosecution.
Conduct community-oriented policing activities, including public assistance and crime prevention.
Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and community partners.
Maintain departmental equipment and complete detailed reports.
Qualifications
Education

High school diploma or GED required. A degree in criminal justice or a related field is preferred.
Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles and techniques.
Proficiency in written and verbal communication.
Ability to make sound decisions in high-pressure situations and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and the public.
Special Requirements

Must be 21 years of age or older.
Must be a U.S. citizen or meet eligibility for citizenship within 18 months of hire.
Valid Oregon driver's license required.
Successful completion of physical agility qualifications, background investigation, psychological evaluation, and medical examination.
Certification as a law enforcement officer by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training within 12 months of employment.
