Job Description

Are you detail-oriented and enjoy problem-solving? We're looking for a Research Clerk I to join our remote team! In this role, you'll help ensure timely and accurate processing of utility payments, assist in resolving account discrepancies, and support clients by preventing service interruptions. If you're organized, a great communicator, and ready to learn, we'd love to hear from you!

What You'll Do:

Research utility termination warnings, potential missing bills, and late fees by reviewing payment history and account postings.

Contact utility vendors to verify balances, confirm payment application, and negotiate extensions or solutions to avoid service disruptions.

Work with vendors to remove late fees and penalties when applicable.

Provide written correspondence (email or fax) to vendors as needed for payment resolution.

Process payment research tasks such as handling misapplied payments, stop payments, and reissuing checks.

Maintain and update internal databases related to termination research, missing bills, and late fees.

Review and analyze late fee reports, contacting vendors to request fee removal where possible.

Answer vendor hotline calls and provide timely assistance within a two-hour response window.

Ensure clients are removed from unnecessary billing formats such as summary billing and donation-based invoices.

Keep clear and accurate documentation of all research, communications, and procedural updates.

Support the team by working overtime when required and handling additional duties as assigned.

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with vendors and internal teams.

Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks effectively and prioritize workload.

Proficiency with standard office equipment and Microsoft Office applications.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

A high school diploma or equivalent.

At least 6 months of experience in a customer service or collections role, or equivalent work experience.

A basic understanding of utility billing processes is a plus.
